AMMAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — King Abdullah II of Jordan on Monday stressed the need for de-escalation and comprehensive calm to prevent a regional war, according to a statement released by the Royal Hashemite Court.
During a call with U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday, the king said that achieving an immediate and permanent ceasefire to end the catastrophe in Gaza is essential for safeguarding regional security and preventing further conflict.
The king called for ceasing all escalatory moves, as well as respecting and implementing international law according to unified standards, the statement said.
He also warned of extremist settler violence against Palestinians and unilateral Israeli actions that undermine peace prospects and target the historical and legal status quo of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. He cautioned that such actions could exacerbate regional violence.
The Jordanian leader stressed the important role of the United States in stopping the war in Gaza, reaching an immediate and permanent ceasefire, as well as creating a political horizon for a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution.
Biden thanked the king for his efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region, reaffirming the United States’ unwavering support for Jordan, according to the statement. ■
